Easy DIY Dog Cake Recipe

For Chester's third birthday we decided to get our bake on and make him a cake! We used easy to find, human grade ingredients that dogs love the taste of and their tummy's appreciate (yep - we said it - no number two interruptions).

Below is the recipe we followed but feel free to add different fruits (or veg) if you feel like being a bit more adventurous!

If you decide to get your bake on be sure to tag us in any photos so we can reshare and celebrate with you.

Ingredients

Cake

  • 1 banana mashed

  • 1/4 apple chopped into small pieces

  • 1 tablespoon of honey

  • 1 tablespoon of peanut butter

  • 1 tablespoon of yoghurt

  • 1 teaspoon of chia seeds crushed

  • 1/3 cup buckwheat flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 50ml of water

Decorating

  • 150g of yoghurt

  • 30g of blueberries

  • 1/2 banana cut into circles

  • 1 teaspoon of chia seeds

  • Some treats your dog loves for decoration

Method

Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees.

  2. Place a drop of oil in your cake tin and use a paper towel to spread it around.

  3. Place some buckwheat flour into the pan and move it around to create a non-stick base for your cake. If you have cooking spray - you can use this instead.

  4. Mash your banana in your bowl.

  5. Add your chopped apple, honey, peanut butter, yoghurt, chia seeds and mix till well combined.

  6. Add buckwheat flour and baking soda and mix. It will be thick.

  7. Add water slowly while mixing until you get a smooth slightly runny consistency.

  8. Pour into cake tin and place in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden.

  9. Repeat steps two - seven for the top layer of the cake.

  10. If cake rises cut a bit off the top to have a flat surface for ideal cake stacking.

Decorating

  1. On top of the bottom layer add yoghurt and banana pieces then place second layer of cake of top.

  2. Coat top layer in yoghurt. You can mix yoghurt with peanut butter for a thicker icing that will hold for longer but we just went with plain yoghurt.

  3. Scatter blueberries and chia seeds on top.

  4. Add some of your dogs favourite treats, a candle and voilà! Cake is done!
